Family Estrangement

Family estrangement can be deeply painful and isolating. This holds true for the person initiating the estrangment and the person who does not want the estrangement. Whether you're navigating distance from a parent, child, sibling, or other loved one, the silence can feel heavy with grief, confusion, or even relief—often all at once. Unfortunately, estrangement can be extremely isolating. Please reach out.

What Causes Estrangement?

Estrangement can stem from a range of complex issues, such as:

  • Emotional, verbal, or physical abuse

  • Unresolved family conflict

  • Cultural norms between generations.

  • Differences in values, identity, or lifestyle

  • Mental health or substance use concerns

  • Boundary violations or unmet needs

Sometimes, estrangement is a conscious choice for safety and healing. Other times, it occurs gradually and without clear closure. Yet, at other times, it happens suddenly and without warning.

The Emotional Impact

Those who experience estrangement often wrestle with:

  • Grief and loss

  • Shame or guilt

  • Anger or resentment

  • Confusion or self-doubt

  • Suicide Ideation

  • Relief or freedom, mixed with sadness

These feelings are valid and complicated. You are NOT alone.
